Facing a provincial election Oct. 10 Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says there are no plans to reconsider the funding of Catholic schools in Ontario because that would mire the province in a "constitutional debate." In a Global TV interview Sept. 22, McGuinty added, "It's not going to happen on my watch."  The Progressive Conservatives want to extend education funding to a wide range of faiths.

In New York Sept. 23 for a meeting at the UN headquarters, Afghan President Hamid Karzai praised Canada as one of the "great contributors" to Afghanistan in terms of military troops and financial aid to his country, Sun Media reported.  "It has given us a lot; it has given the lives of its sons and daughters in Afghanistan," he said. "We are grateful for it and we will support Canadian efforts in bringing more resources to Afghanistan, be that military or financial and reconstruction."
