Marion
Dewar, a former Mayor of Ottawa, a former NDP Member of Parliament and a Catholic
feminist, died Sept. 15 at the age of 80 after a fall while visiting Toronto for the
Toronto International Film Festival. Dewar was a speaker at the international
Women's Ordination Worldwide (WOW) conference in Ottawa in 2005. She told the almost 500
people from 20 countries who attended the event that people have asked her why she still
goes to a Catholic church. "I say I go to that church because it's my church and I'm
part of the people of God," she said. "I think it's totally irresponsible for
people to meet injustices and not name them. We have a responsibility to name injustices
as we see them." |
