Bishop Nicola De Angelis of the Diocese of Peterborough, Ont.
                  BRIEF

Father  Ed Cachia, 56, was fired as pastor of St. Michael's Parish in Cobourg, Ont.,  after writing  a newspaper article urging his church to allow for the ordination of  women to the priesthood, the Globe and Mail reported Oct. 22. Cachia had also reportedly told his bishop (Bishop Nicola De Angelis of the Diocese of Peterborough, Ont.) that he had celebrated mass with women priests in the United States. Cachia said the bishop has given him $1,000 a month to live on for the rest of the year and then he is on his own — without pension, benefits or a roof over his head, the newspaper reported. He also said he estimates about 95 per cent of his congregation supports him.

Court of Appeal finding that a United Church that operated an Indian residential school in Port Alberni, B.C., has immunity against liability for abuse. The unanimous decision confirmed a trial judge's finding that the federal government and the church were liable for 75 per cent and 25 per cent of damages respectively. The decision is being studied by the Presbyterian and Anglican Churches in Canada, and the Roman Catholic religious orders that operated residential schools for the federal government. Thousands of abuse claims have been filed against the government, the churches and the religious orders.

Bev Desjarlais says her stand against same-sex marriage cost her the NDP nomination in the next federal election. Desjarlais, who has been the MP for Churchill since 1997, was the only NDP member to vote against the same-sex marriage bill, which was passed earlier this year.
