In
his "charge" to the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa Oct. 12, Bishop John
Chapman made it clear that the members' vote on same-sex blessings is a
recommendation that is not binding on the diocese or the bishop. Synod voted 177 to 97 to
ask the bishop to allow same-sex blessings. The Ottawa diocese was the first in
Canada to vote on the issue since the national church rejected same-sex blessings
this summer. "If people chose to leave the church, for one reason of another, then
they would walk apart," the bishop told reporters later. "Their departure would
result in sadness and grief and a sense of loss," he said. "That is their
decision and we will grieve their decision." |

as "taking the pulse" of the diocese but said he would consult with other
bishops before deciding on a policy. |
