Immigration Minister Monte Solberg says the target of 300,000 new immigrants to Canada each year as set by the previous Liberal government was too high. However, in his appearance before a House of Commons Committee May 10, Solberg did not say how many new immigrants should be allowed in Canada each year. "I think the issue going forward requires some thought, given especially the huge burden this will place on … communities like Toronto and Montreal," he said. Solberg said there is a backlog of 800,000 applications for new immigrants to come to Canada .
