solberg (Small).jpg (43523 bytes) Immigration Minister Monte Solberg had only started to speak at the annual meeting of Citizens for Public Justice at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Ottawa May 31 when he was ambushed by noisy demonstrators believed to be members of Solidarity Across Borders from Montreal. The minister was besieged on all sides by the protesters who  took over the microphone, screamed at him and held up protest banners. They also blocked him from leaving the room by the main entrance. CPJ officials formed a cordon around Solberg and he left by the back door followed by protesters. However, the demonstrators then prevented his vehicle from leaving the area. Police were called in to clear the route but no arrests were made. CPJ organizers apologized to the crowd at the meeting, saying they had hoped for a "civilized dialogue" with the minister.
