Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Lawrence Huculak, O.S.B.M., (above) currently the Ukrainian Catholic Bishop (Eparch) of Edmonton, as the Catholic Ukrainian Metropolitan-Archbishop (Archeparch) of Winnipeg. He succeeds Bishop Michael Bzdel, C.Ss.R., (below)  who held the position since 1993 and who has stepped down at the church's mandatory retirement age of 75.

Bishop Fred Henry, the often-controversial bishop of Calgary, suggested Catholic politicians imitate More and consider martyrdom before opposing church teaching on issues such as same-sex marriage. "For him, when it came down to the crunch, conscience had to be followed -- and if this meant martyrdom, so be it," he said in an interview,  the Globe and Mail reported Jan. 9.
