lapierre2-th.jpg (44822 bytes) Former federal transport minister Jean Lapierre announced in December that he won't be running in the next federal election. The announcement set off speculation that Justin Trudeau, eldest son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, will seek a seat in the Montreal riding of Outremont, held by Lapierre. Although he has not said anything about his entry into federal politics, Justin Trudeau recently joined the Liberal riding assocation in Outremont.

A black bear crawls out of its den Jan. 14 at   Parc Omega in Western Quebec, where wildlife roam freely in their natural habitat. Normally the several bears in the park would be hibernating until spring, but the unusually mild winter seems to have left nature confused. Scientists and environmental activists have long warned that unchecked global warming could lead to disastrous results.

But this hasn't been the case in much of Central and Eastern Canada this winter with temperatures well above normal. This wolf looks out from a ledge Jan. 14 at   Parc Omega in Western Quebec, where wildlife roam freely in their natural habitat.

Dr. Gamal Solaiman, spiritual leader of Ottawa's 50,000 Muslims, has quit his job and is returning to England. The 74-year old cleric cited failing health. He had been imam of the central mosque in Ottawa for eight years.
