Next fall's national memorial service for slain police officers, held on Parliament Hill,  will be especially difficult for RCMP officers and their families following the shooting deaths of four mounties near Mayerthorpe Alberta March 3. They were gunned down during an investigation of a marijuana growing operation. The gunman then killed himself.

Canon Garth Bulmer, the chairman of the group, pose with the Dorothy O’Connell Award presented to the organization  by the Poverty Awareness Week committee at a ceremony at Ottawa city hall March 1. The Faith Partners ecumenical coalition took a leading role on behalf of the poor and held weekly vigils at the Canadian Human Rights Monument each week for nine years in opposition to social policies of former Conservative Premier Mike Harris.
