The Rev. Samuel Kobia, general
secretary of the World Council of Churches, says the organization is "trying to play
the role that's expected of us." He made the comment, quoted by the Associated Press,
following the closing of the recent 10-day meeting of the council in Port Alegre, Brazil.
At its meeting, the WCC denounced published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed and
criticized the use of military force to battle terrorism. |

The retirement in December of
Supreme Court Justice John Major (photo) paves the way for the first appointment to the
top court by the new Conservative government of Stephen Harper. Justice Marshall Rothstein
of the Federal Court of Appeal has been nominated to fill the vacant seat and is to be the
first appointee to face an all-party review before being formally named to the court. |
