Former professor Stephane Dion, 51, became the new leader of the federal Liberal Party Dec. 2 on the fourth and final ballot, garnering 54.7 per cent of the votes. Dion came from behind to beat the front-runner, Toronto academic Michael Ignatieff.

Cape Breton singer John Allan Cameron died Nov. 22 in a Toronto hospital after a long struggle with cancer. He was 67. His funeral was held Nov. 27 at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Pickering, Ont. Cameron, from Mabou, N.S. ,was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and leukemia five years ago. He recieved an Order of Canada, presented to him three years ago by then-Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.

Walter Robinson, former national director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), has been appointed chief of staff of Ottawa's newly elected mayor, millionaire businessman Larry O'Brien. 

goodale-th.jpg (49875 bytes) Fellow Members of Parliament have voted Saskatchewan Liberal MP Ralph Goodale as the best MP in Canada. In an Ipsos-Reid survey conducted for Maclean's, L'actualité and the Dominion Institute, the MPs judged Goodale as  "Best Overall," "Best Orator," and one of three winners for "Most Knowledgeable." Ontario Liberal MP Paul Szabo, was voted the "Hardest Working" MP.
