Jack Stagg, a
former Deputy Minister of Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada, died of cancer in
Ottawa August 9 at the age of 59. He was considered a skilled negotiator who helped settle
many Northern land claims. At the time of his death, Stagg was Deputy Minister of Veterans
Affairs Canada. |

of Light competition in Gatineau, Quebec, from July 29 to August 12. The show is recognized by the American Bus Association as one of the top 100
events in North America. |

The Terry Fox
run, in memory of the young man who became a national hero when he ran across the country
to raise money for cancer research, is to be held on September 17. He died in June 1981
without completing his cross-Canada journey. But his memory lives on through the Marathon
of Hope, which has raised more than $400 million worldwide for cancer research in Terry's
name. The monument to Terry, the youngest Canadian to be awarded the Order of Canada,
stands across from Parliament Hill.

"conscience of the legal profession," Vancouver lawyer Dugald Christie, pictured

killed when his bicycle was struck by a van on the Trans-Canada Highway near Sault Ste.
Marie, ON, July 31. Christie, 65, believed all Canadians should have equal access to
justice, regardless of income. His efforts led to the establishment of dozens of clinics
in western Canada that provided free legal advice to people who couldn't afford a lawyer. |

Back Falls, a series of waterfalls in the Rideau River in Ottawa, produces a waterfall
outline resembling that of a woman wearing a hat and cape, and holding something her hands
