Dr. Mark Wainberg, director of McGill University's AIDS Centre in Montreal and co-host of the International AIDS conference, is disappointed that Prime Minister Stephen Harper will not be at the conference, which opened in Toronto August 13. Harper has declined to attend, citing other commitments.

Canadian Stephen Lewis, the UN's special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, says "Nothing compensates for the absence of the prime minister" at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, The Canadian Press reported. "It stands out like a raw wound." 
stagg-npt (Small).JPG (38686 bytes) Jack Stagg, a former Deputy Minister of Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada, died of cancer in Ottawa August 9 at the age of 59. He was considered a skilled negotiator who helped settle many Northern land claims. At the time of his death, Stagg was Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada.

Explosions of light and sound

The winning fireworks team from Italy lights up the night sky at the annual international Casino du Lac-Leamy Sound of Light competition in Gatineau, Quebec, from July 29 to August 12. The show is recognized by the American Bus Association as one of the top 100 events in North America.

terry fox3 (Small).jpg (24374 bytes) The Terry Fox run, in memory of the young man who became a national hero when he ran across the country to raise money for cancer research, is to be held on September 17. He died in June 1981 without completing his cross-Canada journey. But his memory lives on through the Marathon of Hope, which has raised more than $400 million worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name. The monument to Terry, the youngest Canadian to be awarded the Order of Canada, stands across from Parliament Hill.

He was killed when his bicycle was struck by a van on the Trans-Canada Highway near Sault Ste. Marie, ON, July 31. Christie, 65, believed all Canadians should have equal access to justice, regardless of income. His efforts led to the establishment of dozens of clinics in western Canada that provided free legal advice to people who couldn't afford a lawyer.

Woman in a Waterfall

A wall of jagged rock at Hog's Back Falls, a series of waterfalls in the Rideau River in Ottawa, produces a waterfall outline resembling that of a woman wearing a hat and cape, and holding something her hands as she walks away. The photo, taken August 11, was not digitally altered.
