Mounties have been riding on horseback on Parliament
Hill for thre past 30 years but the practice has ended. The RCMP horses are now
confined to a corral behind the Parliament buildings. "It's pre-emptive, it's
proactive and we're in no way limiting the access to the horse for the tourists on the
Parliament Hill," RCMP spokeswoman, Sgt. Nathalie Deschênes told Canadian Press
August 10. She said the decision was made after the RCMP's musical ride staff realized
that the public is not as accustomed to horses as it was in the past. The new RCMP
Commissioner, William Elliott, said, "It's better that we make a change and
avoid someone being hurt."

Hundreds
of spectators turned out to see a Canadian first in Ottawa August 11, as modern
bridge-building technology accomplished in less than one day what would normally have
taken over two years. Using "rapid-replacement" technology, two heavy-lift
transporters jacked up and removed an existing bridge over the main expressway in the
nation's capital and replaced it in 17 hours with two 640-tonne bridges constructed next
to the site over the past four months. The feat, by Dufferin Construction, cost $8.6
million, but saved the province about $2.4 million.

Two Solitudes
The setting sun as seen from
the vantage point of Ottawa's scenic Rideau Falls lays a yellow, orange and gold cloak
over office buildings in Gatineau, Que., on the other side of the Ottawa River. The photo
was 'tonemapped' by blending three photos taken from the same location but at
different exposures. A slow shutter speed was used on each shot to give a silky appearance
to the falls. |
