In an emotional
address at the closing of the annual diocesan synod Oct. 21, Anglican Bishop Peter Coffin
announces that he will retire as bishop of the Diocese of Ottawa at the end of July 2007.
Coffin, who has been the diocesan bishop for over seven years, surprised many of the 300
delegates at the meeting, saying, "I believe it's time for me to move on." The
60-year-old bishop said he wants to spend more time as Bishop Ordinary for the
Canadian Forces. "This is something I really want to do," he said. Coffin added
that he has also been asked to teach at Saint Paul University in Ottawa. The
Catholic university has had an Anglican studies program for 25 years. |
