Ottawa religious leader Rabbi
Reuven Bulka says an animated cartoon depicting Pope Benedict XVI giving a Nazi salute to
the Virgin Mary is "horrible, unwanted and an inexcusable insult," the Ottawa
Citizen reported May 28. The cartoon, which appears on the website rabble.ca, is published
by prominent feminist Judy Rebbick, who defends it as legitimate satire. The cartoon has
been condemned by the Catholic Civil Rights League. The pope has acknowledged he was
forced to join the Hitler Youth during the Second World War. |

Bishop Paul-Andre Durocher of
the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall has cut the diocese's ties with priests who are part of
the Army of Mary, a Quebec-based religious community that believes its founder, an
84-year-old woman, is the reincarnation of Mary. The contracts with two of the Sons of
Mary priests ended when they refused Durocher's request to reject the movement's
teachings, the Ottawa Citizen reported May 28. A third priest -- who rejected the
teachings -- is to be incardinated as a diocesan priest. The Army of Mary, headed by
Marie-Paul Giguere, says it has 25,000 followers in Canada, the United States and several
European countries. |

diocese's contracts with two of the priests for refusing to reject the teachings of the
movement. |
