Quebec journalist Michaelle
Jean, 48 is to be sworn in as Canada's 27th governor general Sept. 27. She and her
husband, filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond, and their six-year-old daughter Marie-Eden were
introduced to reporters on Parliament Hill Aug. 4. |

Prime Minister Paul Martin
says he isn't planning to call a fall election, but tells reporters on Parliament Hill
Aug. 4 that the opposition might think differently. "I have said I will call an
election 30 days after Mr. Justice Gomery submits his final report, that is my
intention," he said. |

Ernest
(Smokey) Smith received the Queen's Jubilee Medal from Veteran's Affairs Minister
Rey Pagtakhan in Ottawa three years ago. Smith, Canada's last surviving winner of the
Victoria Cross died Aug. 3 in Vancouver. He was 91. Prime Minister Paul Martin called
Smith a remarkable Canadian and a man who "stood for courage and resolve at a
time of great need." |
