Bishop Eugene LaRocque, the bishop-emeritus of Cornwall, Ont., is facing at least five lawsuits from men who say he sexually abused them decades ago. The first suit against LaRocque, 78, was filed July 4 by a bus driver who claims the cleric abused him 30 years ago when he was an altar boy. LaRocque has denied the allegations.

Lawyer Greg Stack, who represents most of a group of 40 victims of sexual abuse by priests, is pleased but skeptical about a negotiated settlement between St. George's Diocese in Newfoundland-Labrador and the victims. "I'll believe it when I see the first cheques," CTV reported July 6. "We've come too close, too often to think that just because there's another award in our favor that this is it." The settlement requires the diocese to raise $13 million for compensation to the victims by selling 134 properties including up to 60 churches and the diocese headquarters.

Catholic MP Charlie Angus says other MPs who supported same-sex marriage have received death threats but that he is the only one who is the target of religious censure. The New Democrat MP for Timmins-James Bay said in an Ottawa Citizen report July 6 that his faith has been used as a "political football." His parish priest,  Fr. John Lemire, refused to give Angus communion after he voted in favor of same-sex marriage in Parliament June 28. Lemire told the newspaper there is an expectation that Catholic politicians will adhere to the church's values while carrying out their legislative duties, just as any Catholic should follow their faith in the workplace.

Bishop Paul Marchand of Timmins, Ont., supported the decision of Fr. John Lemire early this year to refuse communion to Catholic MP Charlie Angus if he voted for the government's same-sex marriage bill. Lemire made good on his warning after Angus voted for the legislation June 28.
