Independent MP Chuck
Cadman, 57, died July 9 in Surrey, B.C. after a two-year battle with cancer. In May he
supported Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberal government on a crucial budget
vote."With integrity and principle, Chuck Cadman came into politics to make a
difference," said Prime Minister Paul Martin. "And he succeeded. To say the
least, he will be missed by us all."

Bishop Ronald Fabbro of the
Diocese of London, Ont., has barred Catholic MP Joe Comartin from giving marriage
preparation sessions in the diocese because of his support for same-sex marriage. Fabbro
wrote that "a person who does not accept Catholic teaching on fundamental matters is
disqualified from acting on behalf of the church in a public capacity." Comartin, the New Democrat MP for Windsor-Tecumseh,
said he hopes that some day "the leadership of the Catholic Church would embrace a
fuller sense of inclusion." |

Gov. General Adrienne
Clarkson, 66, was released from hospital in Toronto June 9 and is recovering after an
operation to implant a pacemaker. She is reported to be doing well and in good spirits. |

Gamal Solaiman, the imam of
the Ottawa Mosque, has condemned the transit attacks in England, where he lived for 26
years. He delivered a sermon at the mosque July 8 decrying the attacks and said later that
Muslims "look upon what happened with revulsion and disgust," the Ottawa Citizen
reported. |
