Canadians view the HIV/AIDS crisis as "not our business," says Dr. Mark Wainberg, co-chair of the XVI International AIDS Conference to be held in Toronto in August 2006. "And that's very sad." The HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa is "a social tsunami unparalleled in the history of the world," says Dr. Elizabeth Hynd, director of an orphanage in Swaziland.  She told delegates to the "AIDS in Africa" conference in Gatineau, Que., May 2-3, sponsored by Health Partners International Canada, "This is not speculation. This is already reality."

"The church and many of its leaders are having difficulties accepting that this (HIV/AIDS) pandemic is with us," says Sammy Gumbe, secretary general of the HIV/AIDS Christian Network in Mozambique. "There is therefore a slow response from the church in regards to any issues that point to HIV/AIDS." Gumbe was speaking to  delegates to the "AIDS in Africa" conference in Gatineau, Que., May 2-3, sponsored by Health Partners International Canada.

Keith Martin, Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of National Defence, told delegates to an AIDS in Africa conference in Gatineau, Que., May 2-3- that the reason the government has not put a timeline on the goal of providing  .7 per cent of GNP for assistance to developing countries is "We want to make sure that the monies that we have are being spent better."
