The Roman Catholic Church should stay out of the government's same-sex marriage debate, says Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew. "I find that the separation of the Church and the state is one of the most beautiful inventions of modern times," he told reporters Jan. 27.

Ontario Liberal MP Paul Steckle says his party may pay for its support of same-sex marriage in the next election. Steckle, who represents Huron-Bruce, was the only member to speak out against same-sex marriage at a recent meeting of the Liberal caucus.

The churches are taking their "rightful place with a firm defense of marriage, which is one man and one woman," says Jim Hughes, national president of Campaign Life Coalition. "They are encouraging their flocks to act," he noted Jan. 28. "This is not the time for MPs to concede defeat before the issue is even introduced."

Catholic bishops across Canada, including Archbishop Marcel Gervais of Ottawa, are calling on church members to make their position against same-sex marriage known to MPs. "The term 'marriage' should be retained only for unions of one man and one woman," said Gervais, in a letter read at masses in the archdiocese Jan. 30.
